If you're looking to get divorced, but can't afford to hire a divorce lawyer you can significantly reduce the amount you pay for legal fees and still use a divorce lawyer.  Hopefully, you're looking to get an amicable divorce and you get along well enough with your spouse so that you can have a civil conversation.

If that sounds like you, instead of paying a hefty retainer fee consider paying a divorce lawyer for a one or two hour consultation to find out your rights.
Then find a divorce mediator who can draft a proposed separation agreement which you can have reviewed by your divorce lawyer.  You may be able to save several hundred dollars per hour by using a divorce mediator instead of a divorce lawyer to work out the details.  After several meetings with a divorce mediator, you should receive a proposed separation agreement or divorce agreement.  You can then have your divorce lawyer review the agreement which was prepared by the divorce mediator.

Before meeting with a divorce mediator, find a divorce lawyer.  Before meeting with a divorce attorney, let the lawyer know that you intend to pay the lawyer for consultations and to review and finalize a proposed separation agreement and divorce agreement.  Find out what the hourly rate is in make sure that the attorney is willing to work with you and a divorce mediator this way before meeting with the divorce lawyer.
